La simbologia del numero sette a Roma/The symbolism of the number seven in Rome

Ogni tradizione, cultura e religione ha particolari numeri ai quali associa le proprietà più varie: mistiche, esoteriche o semplicemente legate alla buona ventura. A Roma questo numero era il sette, fedele compagno in diverse epoche delle vicissitudini millenarie della città, prima pagana e poi cristiana.

Each tradition, culture and religion has particular numbers to which it associates the most varied properties: mystical, esoteric or simply linked to good fortune. In Rome this number was seven, a faithful companion in different ages of the millennial vicissitudes of the city, first pagan and then Christian.

Sette erano i colli sui quali si distese il primo nucleo cittadino. Sette erano i re che insieme a Romolo regnarono prima dell’avvento della Repubblica e poi dell’Impero. A Roma c’erano sette gigantesche statue, dette i “Colossi”. Il più famoso di tutti era quello dedicato a Nerone, nei pressi del Colosseo, che prende il nome proprio da quella statua di proporzioni enormi. Infine, i sacerdoti preposti ad allestire le celebrazioni in onore di Giove erano sette.

Seven were the hills on which the first city nucleus spread. Seven were the kings who, together with Romulus, reigned before the advent of the Republic and then the Empire. In Rome there were seven gigantic statues, called the “Colossi”. The most famous of all was the one dedicated to Nero, near the Colosseum, which takes its name from that statue of enormous proportions. Finally, the priests in charge of organising the celebrations in honour of Jupiter were seven.

Un’antichissima tradizione faceva riferimento a sette sventure dalle quali dipendeva la sorte di Roma. Dopo la caduta dell’Impero e l’avvento dell’era cristiana, il numero sette continuò ad avere un significato importante per la città.

An ancient tradition referred to seven misfortunes on which the fate of Rome depended. After the fall of the Empire and the advent of the Christian era, the number seven continued to have an important meaning for the city.

Ricordiamo le Sette Chiese, la Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Sette Dolori, ma anche i sette peccati capitali, le sette virtù, i sette doni dello Spirito Santo e i sette sacramenti.

We remember the Seven Churches, the Church of Santa Maria of the Seven Pains, but also the seven deadly sins, the seven virtues, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and the seven sacraments.
